Witnessing Celtics' 17th championship is bitter-sweet, whether you are Boston fan or not.

The triumph marks the end to their 22 years of wilderness and setting whole list of new NBA benchmarks, but more significantly, it demonstrates a group of people with good hearts making it through perseverance, commitment and integrity.

Everyone by now knows Paul Pierce as a player. But as a person, he personifies someone who is willing to face and grow from his untidy history, instead of turning away from it and starting over.

Kevin Garnett personifies a gifted individual, who is willing to carry the responsibility that comes with it. It means sticking to it through tough time and surrounded by public criticism.

Ray Allen personifies role model of the team, the franchise and the community, who serves that role with discipline and commitment.

But we are not just talking about the players.

Doc Rivers is someone who possesses consistent work ethics - day after day even when his team is lousy, and with accountability - even if losing his job. He treats all his players with respect and they, including the bench, are willing to play hard.

Danny Ainge resembles a family-oriented guy both privately and professionally. He serves his Celtics' root with persistence and patient. Ainge understands that it takes time to assemble a team with the right attitude for the game. He values individual heart, genuineness and work ethics.

Wyc Grousbeck, the co-owner of Celtics, resembles a businessman with good heart and perspective in life. He interacts with the community, building working relationship and getting advice from other owners of the Red Sox and Patriots. These owners who are visible and accountable, have vowed to spend the requisite amount of money to field winning teams. Team A and Team B are always pulling for Team C, and joining hand in community fund-raising. The revival of these franchises mirros what's happening to Boston as a whole.

Their triumph is truely a powerful testimony to other player and management in the league, in which team-success is far more gratifying than 'me-first' or financial fulfillment. And community involvement will serve well in the business world.

The Celtics wins their 17th championship, playing their best game to finish the season. For almost eight months, they have demonstrated consistent defence as a unit and alone the way, they overcome numerous adversity.

Ray Allen rebounds after he's been poked in eye in first-half, when he was already playing with the weight of a family crisis on his shoulders, hitting seven triples and 26 points in total. Both Garnett and Rondo are determined to rebound from their sub-par performance last game right from the start. Garnett records 26 points and 14 rebounds. Rondo records 21 points, 8 assists and 6 steals.

Pierce looks really tired, but still makes up with 17 points and 10 assists. For a moment I worry that he has nothing left in him, thanks God his teammates have taken the load off him.

NBA Finals (Game 5) Highlight, After-thought

The Lakers adds aggressiveness to their game ... bringing to the basket and scoring down low. In the first-half they come out firing and play with desperation. But in the second, their play are more conservative and scrappy at times. Pau Gasol is in attacking mode throughout. He and Lamar Odom plays mostly under the basket.

With Kendrick Perkins out and Kevin Garnett in early foul trouble, the Celtics has lost their edge in the paint. Towards the end of fourth quarter, Garnett, PJ Brown and Pierce are playing with 5 fouls. But the C's is still in the game with one minute left, partly help by the scrappy defence by the Lakers.

With Rondo mostly on the bench, Lakers takes advantage of the lack of quickness in the PG position, repeatly attacking before the C's can setup their defence.

Pierce, who has played the whole game, has 38 points and 8 assists.

While it's now obvious that Celtics is the better team in this series, their window of winning it is actually closing gradually with their physical condition. For Perkins, even if he could play the next game, it will be tough for him to be effective with his strain shoulder which is the same one being operated previously. Rondo's bruise ankle has already taken away his aggressiveness since. The biggest fear is Pierce and his bum knee and twisted ankle. He will be irreplacable if he goes down.

Yes, the C's play perhaps the best second-half in this series. But entering the second quarter, when nothing is going for them and trailing by 21 points, they focus to compete instead of worrying about the deficit. And after they fight hard to cut the margin to 12 midway, and then later losing the momentum to end the quarter when L's brings the lead back to 18, the C's comes out and still determines to compete.

In the fourth, the Big Three are taking turn to make play ... Ray Allen's dribble-driving or distributing to open shooter, Pierce's defending Kobe and penetrating on the other end, Garnett's posting and rebounding. Together with Eddie House and James Posey on the floor, they play in unity and trusting each other ... something that is missing from their opponents.

Ray Allen, who plays all 48 minutes, has 19 points and 9 rebounds.

As expected, the Lakers play with agressiveness. By getting to the paint, Kobe who scores 36 points is able to either making play or drawing foul. By doing so, they are getting high-pecentage shots. Had not been the poor free-throw shooting, the L's could have pulled away much early.

Lakers have made adjustment by switching Kobe and Fisher to defend their counterparts. It creates a few mismatch opportunity early for their transition offence. It also enables Kobe to serve as help defence when he can temporary leave his man.

Kobe has done a better job in penetrating Celtics' defence scheme, by continue dribbing past the C's help defence into the gap and paint area.

Lakers' bench, Sasha Vujacic in particular, outscores Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce combined.

The Celtics, other than Ray Allen, has a poor shooting game. But their defence and Ray Allen's offence has kept it within striking distance. As poor as their shooting, they are still in the game with a minute left.

Pierce doesn't seem to have his quickness throughout the game, most possibly because of his knee still hurting. C's also misses Rajon Rondo down the stretch, bordered by sprain ankle.

With the uncertainty of Pierce's right knee, the Celtics play with more urgency in the first three quarters. This is partly reflected in the disparity of free-throw attempt, 38-10 to their favour. But it is also to do with the somewhat surprising inexperience of the Lakers, unable to counter the momentum when needed and playing soft at time. It results a 22 points lead for the C's into fourth quarter. The C's then becomes complacent, and the L's is able to build on their momentum.

Lakers' 41 points quarter is their largest against the Celtics in the playoff. This will give them psychological edge going back home. They have made a number of adjustment including establishing the post-game using Pau Gasol, and isolating Kobe at times to prevent C's defence help.

Celtics have played an efficient game, registered 31 assists and 52.9% shooting. The way they play is just nice to watch. It seems that the whole team, including the bench, is now peaking.

Pierce has 28 points and 8 assists. Leon Powe comes off the bench for 21 points. Rajon Rondo has 16 assists. Kevin Garnett and PJ Brown, in my opinion, are the unsung heros, defending the pick-n-roll and playing tough in the paint.

In the third quarter, Doc Rivers pulls his team together during timeout and said, "when adversity comes, we get through it together as a team." This is after Paul Pierce injuries his knee, being carried off the court in extreme pain and taken to the locker room in a wheelchair. It takes the air out of the team and everyone else in the Garden. Lakers have a 4 points lead.

The C's gathers their thought after the timeout. For the next one plus minutes, we all witness Celtics' ubuntu. They steps up their defence and offence, stopping Kobe's shot and scores the next 6 points. This is beautiful basketball.

Pierce's heroic return definitely gives the team a boost, not to mention his consecutive 3 pointers later on.

Other than Kobe, Fisher and Gasol, the rest of Lakers look nervous. On the contrary, the C's are much more composed. Garnett has 24 points and 13 rebounds, Pierce has 22, Ray Allen has 19, and Rondo has 15 points and 7 assists.

The Road to Triumph - The Second Act

The Big Three are exactly at where they want to be, playing in the NBA Finals and a chance for triumph. But their Celtics is widely considered as the underdog (ESPN), against Kobe's lead Lakers.

True, Celtics have beaten the Pistons (6 times Eastern finalists), at their own court, in 6 games. But Lakers have beaten the Spurs (reigning NBA champion) in 5.

Celtics have the Big Three (2.0), featuring Kevin Garnett (Defensive Player of the Year). But Lakers have MJ (2.0), featuring Kobe Bryant (MVP). Celtics have Paul (Pierce) and Ray. Lakers have Pau (Gasol) and Odom ... big men who can pass and shoot.

Celtics has the best defensive efficiency, even Lebron James could not crack through majority of that series . But Lakers play the triangle-post offence, in such efficiency even the Spurs repeatedly sees their double-digits lead evaporate.

Celtics' Red Auerbach is no longer watching from courtside. The successor, Doc Rivers and Tom Thibodeau, have been battle tested after three grilling series. But Lakers has the know-it-all Phil Jackson.

Rivers is known as quick learner and learning on the fly. Jaskon is better known as his laid-back style and letting players to figure out the game.

Celtics' bench has a nicely mix of youth with experience. Lakers' bench is catching-up fast because their coach allows them to play through mistake.

Celtics has the urgency to win, knowing how precious this opportunity is. Lakers has the savvy to win, having won it before.

Celtics has the home-court advantage. Lakers play game 3, 4 and 5 at home (2-3-2 format).

Celtics believes in Ubuntu. Lakers believes in Kobe Jackson.

Conclusion:

Celtics is now facing a better team for the first time in the playoff. They will need to fight every single game in this series, like it's game 7, keeping the Lakers off-balance and thus taking away some of their edges. They need to have their defence-offence game in sync in order to win game ... they need Ray Allen and Paul Pierce to score.

This battle will be won by the team with stronger will and character.

This is the best fourth quarter that Celtics have played in the playoff, where Pistons are still up by 10 points early. The C's have kept their poise when things go rough. Paul Pierce has exerted his will, after a bad call, and follows with sequence of big play. That is great leadership and his teammates follow him.

Pistons are still in the game with less than two minutes to play. But James Posey steals the ball from Tayshaun Prince and thus forcing the P's to foul. Doc Rivers has opted Posey, instead of Ray Allen, for the entire fourth quarter to guard Chauncey Billups.

This one goes to the wire. Celtics makes a 16-4 run in the second quarter and builds a 13 points lead after three quarters. But the Pistons fights back for the exciting finish.

The Celtics' starters have played their best game, prompting Doc Rivers to shorten the rotation and play them most of the game.

Kendrick Perkins is a beast on the posts, graping 16 rebounds and scoring 18 points. Ray Allen has his best shooting game, making 5 of 6 3-pointers (scoring 29 points). Few of those are assisted by Rondo. He has 13 assists in total. The screen-n-roll set between Allen and Kevin Garnett have repeatly paid dividends. When the P's fails to close-in Allen, he makes them paid. Later when the P's blanket Allen, he rolls the ball to Garnett and KG makes his mid-range shots. Garnett has 33 points. With the C's game clicking in all cylinders, Paul Pierce compliments with his all-round game on both ends. He has 16 points.

In the final minute, with just 1 point lead and the C's inbounds from P's end, Allen and Garnett runs the screen-n-roll again. Only this time Garnett has set a hard pick, allowing Allen the space to make his shot and brings the lead back to 3. Nice play.

C's responds to P's physical play with physical. In game 4 the Celtics' offense gets thrown-off because they are intimidated by the physical plays. Tonight they are ready. As an indication, take a look at the rebound stats, C's has a 42-25 advantage.

On the negative side, the C's is still learning how to finish the fourth quarter. When the score gets uncomfortably close, they get passive and giving-up the lead. If there is a game 7, the C's must do a better job to finish it off.

Eastern Conf Finals (Game 4) Highlight

The Pistons should have pulled the game away much earlier.

Instead, the Celtics stay competitive till last two plus minutes, thanks for the free-thow disparity. C's has more points from the line (32) than from the field early in the fourth quarter.

The P's forces the Big Three out of rhythm with defense. Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen combines to miss their first seven shots and finished 11-for-38 from the field.

Antonio McDyess has his best game of the playoffs for Pistons, scoring 21 points and grabbing 16 rebounds.

Doc Rivers is still joggling with his option for backup PGs. Sam Cassell has his pros and cons. At times Cassell's confidence over-spills for erratic outside shooting, rather than running the offence, and disrupting the rhythm of the team.

The Pistons, on the other hand, are not as balance as in game 2. Tayshaun Prince scores 4 points and Chauncey Billups has 6, combining to shoot 3-for-17.

The P's are resilient and mentally strong. They keep hitting tough shots through Celtics' defence, and making key stops in the final minutes. The C's have staged several comeback attempts, but each time the P's answer. And it is not just one or two players, everybody from starters to the bench (Rodney Stuckey) have stepped up.

The Big Three combines 75 points in a losing effort.

The problem now is how the Celtics can win at least a game in Detroit, with the Big Three have already played at near peak efficiency and still comes up short. Doc Rivers have blamed it on C's defence. Sure, the C's fails to switch to Richard Hamilton and leaves Kevin Garnett in a mis-match, and no one is guarding Chauncey Billups when he catches the in-bound pass for a layup under the basket in the final minute.

So it remains to be seen if the C's has to play a perfect road game in order to get a win.

Celtics' "secret weapon"

The Boston Celtics have for the past few years been one of the most data-driven teams in the league. The team employs what the general manager, Danny Ainge, calls his “secret weapon,” a 32-year-old named Mike Zarren, who seems to know every data point about every NBA player, past and present.

Kevin Garnett calls him Numbers, the Celtics Dancers call him Stats and Paul Pierce calls him MIT (his actual title is Basketball Operations Analyst).

Ainge says. “Mike is a much smarter guy than I am. I’m open to smarter people than me. It still comes down to my instincts. I have to make the choice, no matter what my scouts say, no matter what the models say. I don’t think it’s realistic to think that a statistical model will ever be foolproof in basketball because there are so many variables, but I do think it can help us.”

There are two channels through which Zarren can help the Celtics. The first is by assessing potential deals and draft picks, which means bouncing information off of Ainge. The second channel is strategic advice, which means going to Doc Rivers, whom Ainge says is “skeptically receptive” to Zarren’s insights.

Q. What’s the most efficient shot to take besides a layup?
A. Easy, says Zarren: a three-pointer from the corner.

Q. What’s one of the most misused, misinterpreted statistics?
A. “Turnovers are way more expensive than people think,” Zarren says. That’s because most teams focus on the points a defense scores from the turnover but don’t correctly value the offense’s opportunity cost — that is, the points it might have scored had the turnover not occurred.

Zarren admits that Ray Allen’s worth goes far beyond his perimeter shooting, that Rajon Rondo’s rebounding was an undervalued asset, that Leon Powe’s surprisingly strong play was not so surprising to the Celtics and that, as transformative a player as Garnett was known to be, he has generated a variety of offensive and defensive pluses that even the Celtics didn’t anticipate.

Zarren is also responsible for the Celtics’ basketball-related technology and uses a service that delivers video footage tagged with statistical information. With just a few mouse clicks, he can call up every clip in which LeBron James has touched the ball at the top of the key and see whether he went left or right, is double-teamed or not, passes or shoot — and, if the latter, whether he misses, scores or is fouled. So if the Celtics dampen Lebron’s scoring the next time they play a high-stakes game against the Cavaliers, Zarren might be entitled to a smidgen of credit.

If one wonders how much it has panned out in the Cavaliers series, take a look at Lebron James' stat sheet. He is shooting 35 percent (55 of 155). But in Game 7 yesterday, he explodes and scores 45 points in 48 percent shooting (14 of 29). He is eventually stopped baseline by PJ Brown, who has been inserted in the decisive quarter.

This is a thriller. The shoot-out between Paul Pierce and Lebron James will be remembered as one of the NBA Classics, next to another Game 7 Classics 20 years ago between Larry Bird and Dominique Wilkins.

But it isn't just Pierce, the rest of C's make crucial play towards the end: PJ Brown's plays on both end of the court, Eddie House's interception and James Posey forcing jump ball.

One of Pierce's biggest play does not reflect in stats sheet. With one-minute to play and a 3 points lead, he steals the jump-ball intended for LeBron and calling time-out.

Celtics-Cavaliers Playoff (Game 6) Highlight

The Cavs have forced Game 7.

Both teams play hard, even though neither team have shot well. The Celtics have fought their way back, from 16 points deficit in the third, to 3 points margin with 16 seconds remaining in the clock. The fact that the C's haven't quit is a good sign.

But Celtics have given too many fouls and the Cavs capitalise. Lebron James alone scores 13 of his 32 points from the foul line. He also has 6 of the team's 10 assists, 12 rebounds and 2 steals.

Doc Rivers have inserted Eddie House and Glen Davis into rotation, instead of Sam Casssell and Leon Powe. The result is mixed. While House has contributed some quick buckets, Davis has lot of trouble around the rim.

With the experience of previous round, the C's should be more mentally prepared to handle the intensity of another game 7. Added with the energy of home court, the C's hopefully can continue to clamp on Lebron James, as they have done a good job so far, but without giving up silly foul.

Celtics-Cavaliers Playoff (Game 5) Highlight

This is the best game of the series so far. Both teams have performed under pressure. With a strong third quarter and the crowd behind, Celtics are able to protect the margin to the finish.

Lebron James has his best offensive game (35 points and 5 assists). But Rajon Rondo has counter Lebron's performance with his own 20 points, 13 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks. Not known for his shooting touch, Rondo makes consecutive 3 pointers in the second.

Critics have been over Doc Rivers' bench substitution in Game 4, in favouring Sam Cassell and Glen Davis instead of Eddie House and Leon Powe. Doc continues the same rotation in Game 5, but sticking with Rondo more instead of Cassell. Glen Davis' energy has also given the C's a lift.

The Celtics shoots just 40% from the field while allowing 53% shooting from the Cavs. Doc Rivers said, "We got great shots to start the game, but when we started missing them, and instead of being the solid defensive team we've been, we got down because our offense was down."

To me it sounds like the C's still lacks the cohesiveness to fight through adversity, which will be tested again and again before they can reach championship caliber, like the Pistons.

LeBron James has a better-than-solid stats (21 points, eight assists, five rebounds, four steals and three blocks), but again is inconsistent, in missing 11 of 16 attempts. But his newly acquired teammates comes up big, including Delonte West (21 points) and Wally Szczerbiak (16 points), the two ex-Celtics. Joe Smith has 17, Ben Wallace adds 9 points and 9 rebounds.

Celtics' suffocating defense is executed perfectly. LeBron wants to get to the bucket off pick-and-rolls (85% of their offense, James says) so his defenders are fighting over the top of screens while Kevin Garnett or Kendrick Perkins traps him on the other end. And when he wants to pass out of those double teams to the open teammate, the weakside defenders are rotating and closing to the shooter as soon as the pass is in the air.

Entering the second quarter are Leon Powe, James Posey, PJ Brown, Sam Cassell and only one starter on the floor in Pierce. Ray Allen - All About Preparation (and Ritual)

Ray Allen is second all-time in 3-pointers (behind Reggie Miller).

He has a pregame ritual that does not waver:

a nap from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m., a meal of chicken and white rice at 2:30, an arrival time at the gym at precisely 3:45 to stretch. Allen will shave his head, then walk out to the court at exactly 4:30. He will methodically take shots from both baselines, both elbows, and the top of the key.

When Allen was 8, he had to drop in five lefty layups and five righty layups before he could leave the gym. Sometimes another team needed the floor and he'd run out of time before he could complete his ritual.

"I cried," Allen says. "It messed up my day."

They nicknamed him "Hollywood" when he arrived at the University of Connecticut because he was always color-coordinated, always meticulously groomed. Allen roomed with Travis Knight at UConn. Knight was disorganized, messy. Worst of all, he squeezed the toothpaste tube from the middle. "We said they'd never last together," says UConn coach Jim Calhoun, "and they didn't." Calhoun said, "Ray does things the right way, and expects others to do them, too. People are sloppy - in their preparation, in the way they present themselves."

Allen is outspoken about Kevin Garnett's sweater-and-tie combos, and the omnipresent Adidas logo on everything he wears. He critizes Eddie House for shooting halfcourt shots at intermission at the opposing team's basket.

"I had a borderline case of OCD [obsessive compulsive disorder]," Allen explains. "I was never diagnosed, but it was something I was aware of."

This is how Allen's mind works. If there is a speck of paper on the floor in his house, he cannot walk by without picking it up. He has tried. He has purposely marched up the stairs without correcting the glaring imperfection, but he's unable to eliminate the image from his mind until he goes back down, throws the scrap in the wastebasket, and restores order in his home.

Allen is certain his philosophy works. When he played in Seattle, a veteran leader among a mass of young, floundering talent, he would complete his pregame pattern, then retreat to the locker room where he'd read, often for more than an hour, before anyone else showed up. Allen started a ritual of a halfcourt huddle at the end of games. He didn't just talk to the Sonics about being professional, he showed them how to be professional. Even after a double-digit loss, there was Allen, his head shaved, his shirt tucked in, reading a book, prepared to fight again.

The Celtics have benefited most from Allen, who admits he's made more concessions this season than all the others combined. Doc Rivers said, "Our young guys are lucky to be around him. Too often these kids make it to the NBA and they settle. Ray won't let them." Allen talks to Perkins and Glen Davis about their social life. Allen doesn't drink alcohol. He reminds the young big men, "You have all summer to go out. Do it then. Not now. Not with so much at stake."

There is, however, the free-wheeling Pierce, who never does anything quite the same from game to game. One night Allen gets on the plane and says, "Paul, you're in the wrong seat." Pierce told him, "Man, there's a hundred seats open. Leave me alone."

Pierce says he plans to adopt some of Allen's eating habits and offseason workouts. But that's where he draws the line.

"If I had to stick to the exact same thing every day, I'd kill myself," Pierce says. "What happens if you go for your pregame meal and there's no more salmon in the freezer?" "I love Ray, but I don't get it. I'm not ever going to be at the free throw line saying, 'Damn, I didn't get my parking spot today."

The trio of stars has banged into each other throughout the long NBA season. Sometimes, they've even traded elbows. But, when that happens, Ray Allen has learned to retreat to his corner, regroup, and find a way to adapt.

The space he calls the Boston Celtics can get cluttered. Very cluttered. But, according to Allen's careful calculations, there is still plenty of space inside for a championship trophy.

Playing at home court, the Celtics' defence have suffocated the Hawks to shooting 29.3%. Another impressive stats is the foul-calls, allowing only 16 free-throw attempt, which takes away any chance of closing-in the score. So the Hawks have been completely blown out.

Kendrick Perkins has eight points, six rebounds and two blocks in the first quarter.

Doc Rivers said, "I thought (Perkins) set the tone defensively as much as anyone. I thought Kendrick and P.J. Brown, in the stretch he played in the second quarter, was as good as you're going to get."

'Sleepless in Boston ...'
Several guys could not sleep after the loss in game 6. Ray Allen finds himself sending text message to teammates at 12 the night before the game. Perkins couldn't sleep until 2:30 Sunday morning. Garnett likewise. Doc Rivers needs to take Ambien. Paul Pierce is so happy that the game was at 1pm. He said, "there was no way I could of sat at home today all day today because of my anxiousness to get back on the court after game 6 from the way I been feeling the past couple days."

The Hawks have forced game 7. They are down by 12 in the second and nine in the third, but play a strong fourth quarter.

The Celtics continue to double teaming Joe Johnson every time, but he is able to set up all his teammates for open looks all game long. That lead to a huge run in the fourth that put Celtics on its heals.

The Hawks continue to enjoy the foul-call advantage (47-25 free throws). Pierce fouls out on a disputed call and spends final 4:44 minutes on the bench.

Doc Rivers get Paul Pierce into offence right from the start. Despite running a gauntlet of shoves, bumps and elbows on every move to the hole, Pierce regains his aggressiveness, looking for his shot and in the flow.

Defensively everyone turn up the intensity, doubling Joe Johnson on every possession and holding the Hawks to just four fast-break points.

Rondo Being Transformed

From Boston's game against Detroit on Dec.19 to Game 2 of the Atlanta series Wednesday, the difference in Rondo's on-court demeanor is remarkable. But he is still identified as the little guy with few words.

He never talks on the court, never bitches at the referees, never changes his expression. He demeanor is a sharp contrast to Garnett and rest of the team.

Not even when he learn that he is voted fifth on NBA Most Improved Player list.

Back in December, when Chauncey Billups abuse Rondo in the second half of an eventual defeat, the starting PG looks very green. It doesn't seem like he will be ready, at least this season.

But Rondo keeps getting better and better through the winter, and there is a pivotal moment in March when Rafer Alston gets physical with him on the opening tip and Rondo belts him back, then defiantly stands his ground, ready to trade punches in a nationally televised road game.

He has thrived in Game 2, controling the tempo, banging home open jumpers, barking orders at teammates, outplaying Mike Bibby for the second straight game.

Rondo's transformation draws comparison to Tony Parker, who is into similiar situation, improved mightily in his sophomore season and played a pivotal role for San Antonio's 2003 championship. Playing for the same stakes on a similar team, Rondo is further ahead of the '03 Parker, which gives us an indication of his potential and where he's sitting already.

In Rondo's case, there are two great "What ifs?": What if the KG and Allen trades never happened? And what if Phoenix had just drafted him in 2006 instead of selling the pick? Would Rondo have been better off or worse off in Phoenix backing up Nash? We'll never know, just like we'll never know if he would have matured into a potential All-Star without Garnett and company.

But we do know what we see, and here's what we see: someone who has noticeably improved as a shooter and a leader, someone who has emerged as an elite defender. The best thing you could say about Rajon Rondo is he brings a lot of stuff to the table and doesn't take much off it. The second best thing you could say is he's lucky enough to have influential teammates sitting at that same table.

Celtics have a 10 points lead to begin the fourth quarter, but these young Hawks refuse to go away. Joe Johnson is un-stoppable, scoring 20 of his 35 in the fourth. He combined with Josh Smith scores all of Hawks points in the quarter. Smith also has 7 blocks.

One stats which stands out is the foul-call disparity (33 to 18 favouring the Hawks). And the Celtics making only 10 of 18 doesn't help either.

Rajon Rondo, in perhaps the most anticipated matchup of the night, thoroughly outplayed the man who has tied the Hawks together into a cohesive unit - Mike Bibby. Rondo finished with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field, nine assists and six rebounds. He also applied enough pressure to frustrate Bibby, who had just one assist.

In his first playoff game, Rondo is pretty poised (more). The Hawks repeatly dare him to shoot in the third quarter. Rondo takes the bait, and his first baseline jumper is an airball. He didn't back-off. Rondo makes his next three shots.

Kevin Garnett, who scores 16 points with 10 rebounds, and Ray Allen, who has 18 points, leads the team in rebound and scoring.

As to the addicted fans, here is the long version.

In the 1st round, the reasoning on Phoenix (over Spurs) is mainly that they've built their team to face the Spurs. Shaquille O'Neal has done extremely well defending Tim Duncan over the years. And Phoenix has shown that they could beat Spurs in the regular season.

In the 2nd round, the Utah-Lakers series should be the true conference finals. Based on offensive efficiency rating, Utah is the second best offence team in the league. They have a winning record of 37-12 in 2008. And they have won an astounding 18 games by more than 20 points.
For the Hornets-Suns 2nd round matchup, New Orleans might be even more exhausted after going seven against Dallas, but Phoenix doesn't match up nearly as well with the Hornets -- and New Orleans has home court. This is another series that looks to be about dead even.
That sets up Chris Paul vs. Deron Williams in the conference finals. Even though Paul might get the better of the matchup individually, but Williams has better teammates, so Utah rolls to the Finals in six.

Back East, Detroit will win over Orlando in a grueling seven. Meanwhile, the suffocating defence of Boston will dismiss Washington in four. That sets up a much-awaited conference finals battle between Boston and Detroit. Both teams match-up well in most aspect, with a slight edge to Boston's bench and Sam Cassell. Boston will win in five easier-than-expected games.

The 2-3-2 format and Utah's dominance at home will keep things interesting for a while, but mostly it will allow the Celtics to celebrate a title on their home court after knocking off the Jazz in six.

The Road to Triumph - The First Act

In most epic tales (including Star Wars, Lord of the Rings), we learn that there are typically three parts to the story. The first act introduces the characters and settles the roles they will play. The second act usually brings a turn for the worse and establishes a crisis for the protagonist. It isn’t till the third act with the triumph and history is re-written.

Paul Pierce - Now and Then

Paul Pierce remains one of the most dangerous scorers - if not the most dangerous - on his team, even with Garnett and Allen aboard. His stats for the season (20 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists) doesn't give the whole picture. In fact his scoring is 3 points below his career average, but his field goal percentage (0.46) and assists are higher.

First and foremost, his commitment in defence has been there from the start. On the very first possession of this season against the Washington Wizards, Pierce, overplaying Caron Butler, deflected a pass, then clapped with excitment when the ball grazed off Butler's fingers and out of bounds. The new era of Celtics basketball was officially in motion. This season has been all about defense, because that's all he ever wanted - winning championships.

Pierce has been consistent, unselfish, reliable, and positively buoyant this season. He has more trust in his teammates. He sat for nearly 10 1/2 minutes in a tight game against Detroit March 5 without a complaint, then came in and nailed arguably the biggest shot of the night - a 3-pointer that pushed Boston ahead, 81-77. The Celtics won, 90-78.

Another change to his game is his free-throw shooting. Pierce is a career 79.5% FT shooter. This year: 84.6%. Red's Army dotcom knows the reason why.

The past few years, Paul had gotten into a habit of shooting his free throw by putting his weight over his heels, and fading away from the line. This year he’s got that left foot way back and bending more. By putting his weight forward, he changes his center of gravity and maintains his balance throughout the shot… preventing himself from fading away (see pic).

It has been a tumultuous ride for the Celtics' captain, particularly when you consider the unforgettable playoff debacle against the Pacers was only three seasons ago. That was the seven-game series when the favored Celtics imploded, and Pierce was ejected in Game 6 after picking up two technicals, then ripping off his jersey and waving it at the fans. Celtics eventually lose that series. Pierce was vilified for his sophomoric actions. His leadership and his value to the franchise were questioned. With the wrath of the city and the fan over him, Pierce looked for an opportunity to change thing.

"Paul's not perfect," said Celtics boss Danny Ainge, "but the one thing I've always appreciated about him was he loves to play the game of basketball. He comes to play every night. Now, some nights he might have gotten frustrated, and he didn't always do the right thing, but I think people forget he had a great deal of responsibility and expectations placed on him, and sometimes that wasn't fair."

Drafted in 1998 (10th picks) and after playing two seasons, Pierce was stabbed 11 times in a Boston dance club. He has to undergo lung surgery to repair the damage. He is able to recover from the stabbing and play the full season that year. The stabbing wounds are still visible in his face and back.

This year, he has rededicated himself to conditioning, something he only did in spurts when he was younger. The influence of Ray Allen, a fitness nut, is apparent. Ainge reports, on the offdays after back-to-back games, he can see Pierce from his office window doing sprints on the treadmill. Pierce said that he was so impressed with Allen's conditioning program he was going to implement it for himself this summer.

For better or worse, Pierce brings his honesty and unadulterated persona to lead his team. His path to championship is closer than ever.

Celtics-Hornets Game (Round 2) Highlight

With this victory, the Celtics have beaten every team at least once this season. The last time that happens is in 1990-91. But the game alone is a statement game, avenging last weekend's loss in New Orleans.

Trailing by 22 early in second quarter, Celtics' energy and defence help them to get back in the game. Sam Cassell gets 12 in that quarter and cut the margin to 10. Rondo then picks it up in the third quarter. He gets 12 of his 20 and close the gap to 2.

Cassell’s 3-pointer with 46 seconds left gives the Celtics the lead for good, and Rondo adds a huge offensive rebound and hit two free throws after Cassell’s 3.

As for the match-up of PGs, Rondo has edged out Tony Parker on both ends of the court. Still, Parker is able to make a uncontested layup in the final seconds to make it a 2 points game.

Rajon Rondo stays aggressive thoughout, perhaps too much on several occasions in which he attacks the basket without success. But Doc Rivers lets Rondo in the game to the end, and he is able to help increasing the lead. He draws a charging foul (and a technical) on Billups, that gives the Celtics an 82-77 lead. After a Pistons miss, Rondo gets the loose ball and throws it upcourt, where Pierce grabs it and put it in for an 85-77 lead.

Both Kevin Garnett (31 points) and Kendrick Perkins (20 rebounds) have a big game.

Impact of Sam Cassell

Cassell's knack is hitting big shot. Celtics will need him when they struggle, especially in the final minutes of a close game. His size provides better match-up against bigger, more physical guards like Chauncey Billups. While he may be slow to guard quicker guards, the front line could protect him. With his relationship with Garnett back in Minnesota and with Ray Allen back in Milwaukee, he should fit-in quite nicely.

Bill Simmons thinks that Cassell is unique. "Sam casting his shadow over everyone and everything. There's nobody in the league quite like him. He knows everyone on every team, every referee, every coach ... He's constantly working the crowd, the officials, even other players. He's always up to something ... Sometimes he dribbles upcourt, notices a defender innocently running back to the other end, then lurches into the guy and flops to the floor (always drawing a foul)."

There is, however, some reservation. "Cassell's arrival could ruin Rajon Rondo's confidence, which is in the process of being battered by Doc Rivers' penchant for yanking his minutes around." It will be interesting to see how Rondo handles it.

The best-case scenario would be the Rondo-Cassell tandem working like Tony Parker and Speedy Claxton of the 2003 Spurs. Remember the '03 Spurs -- they had Duncan in his prime, Robinson at the end of his career, a not-quite-ready Manu Ginobili, a hit-or-miss second-year point guard (Parker) and a bunch of role players. Claxton's ability to right the ship during Parker's off-nights plays a significant role in winning the championship.

The Hawks could possibly be Celtics' first round playoff opponent (playoff projection). Watch highlight (NBA TV, ESPN).

The most encouraging is to see how well Kevin Garnett plays, an good indication of his recovery from the abdominal strain.

Garnett has 20 points and 16 rebounds in 35 minutes, blocking no shots but altering several Hawk forays to the hoop. He is the anchor of a defense that held the visitors to 39.5 percent shooting.

Celtics-Cavaliers Game (Round 4) Highlight

Neither team play well. The Cavaliers are playing the second night in a row and have yet to settle their rotation. The Celtics are adjusting, an evening after returning from the long West coast trip. So their head-to-head now stand at 2-2. Watch highlight (NBA TV).

The Cavs use Ben Wallace to keep Kevin Garnett out of the post, but Garnett burns Wallace with series of jumpers in pick-n-rolls play.

With the Pistons losing, the Celtics are now leading by 3 games.

On a separate note, the Celtics have signed veteran P.J. Brown as free-agent, adding defence and strengh to their PF position.

Analysing Offense

As I get more chance to watch Celtics playing, I understand their offense game a bit better.

Celtics' offence is essentially driven by ball movement to get good looking shot. They keep thing simple and not trying to be fancy. Their playbook is pretty much based on this mind set.

When Rajon Rondo is on-court, he frequently pushes the ball up challenging the other team's defence still being setup. He uses his speed trying to beat his counterpart, and if he sees opportunity, slashing to the basket or drawing quick foul. If this first option does not arises, and if time allows, they will move the ball, or else they will setup their play.

Other than the familiar plays of Give-n-Go and Screen-n-Roll (classis motion offense), one of the variation they occassionally run is known as the Dribble-drive Pentration. For the setup, firstly, there is no screens in order to create spacing for drives, and secondly, the post man ran to the weak side of the lane (instead of the ball side), leaving the ball handler an open driving path to the basket.

According to SI's article, Dribble-drive is tailor-made for today's high school and college teams, which favor speed in the absence of classic back-to-the-basket big men, but it isn't for everyone. It requires quick, smart and talented guards who have a feel for the game (like Rondo). It requires agile big men who can shoot from the perimeter and race downcourt (like Garnett). It requires deep benches and three-point shooters who can punish sagging man-to-man defenses and the inevitable zones.

There are some other NBA team, such as the Nuggets, that runs similiar play.

Celtics-Suns Game Highlight

Be warned, it is a pretty ugly game for both teams, with turnovers all over. Watch highlight (ESPN, NBA TV).

Playing against the re-juvenile Shaq, the Celtics have matched intensity and put in good effort in defending and clamping the passing lane (Suns have 10 turnovers before half-time). Even though everyone is having shooting funk, we are only down by 10 with 6 minutes left in the clock.

But the Celtics give up the balls way too many in the second half, losing the momentum and chances to come back.

This is the third straight for the West coast trip, all to the fast-pace shooting teams. The lead to the Pistons is trimmed down to 2 games.

Play-off Projection - Part II

The impact of latest trades make the play-off projection slightly more interesting.

Cavaliers' multi-players trade has drawn the most attention. John Hollinger and Chris Broussard of ESPN analyses it as an upgrade in long-range shooting and adding toughness to the team. The consensus is that this new Cavs is good enough to challenge the Conference champs spot. I still have doubt about their new roster match-up against to say the Pistons, and how quickly they can settle their rotation with less than 30 games before play-off. The Celtics will face them on Feb.27.

While this new Cavs does reinforce my previous prediction for the No.3 seed, they will not be able to overtake either the Celtics nor the Pistons.

Jack McCallum, the Sports journalist, predicts that the Pistons will eventually overtake the Celtics, with a more favorable schedule on the road. With only 3 games ahead and Kevin Garnett still not in good shape, I share this with concern.

Celtics-Warriors Game (Round 2) Highlight

Playing the second night of a back-to-back for both teams, the game is pretty even in many counts. In fact, the Celtics should have a slight advantage, with the absence of key player from the Warriors. But they could not stop Baron Davis, including his last-second 20-foot fadeaway game winner, and contain the rest of Warrior. Watch highlight (NBA TV, ESPN).

So the Celtics lost two in a row, both against the Western Conference. They are no longer the best team in scoring defence, surrounding 243 points in total over the two games.

For consolation, the Pistons have also lost their second straight.

Celtics-Nuggets Game (Round 2) Highlight

Celtics' dominance against the Western Conference came to an end, on the night when Kevin Garnett returns from injury. He had 4 points on 2-of-7 shooting and 8 rebounds in 21 minutes. Watch highlight (ESPN).

The Nuggets show they has plenty of fire power. The score 124-118 is a season-high in points against the Celtics.

Another telling indicator is the free-throw stat. The Celtics has 28 FT attempts (19 made), while the Nuggets has 49 FT attempts (34 made). It is a disparity in terms of officiating.

The lost has little impact to the conference standing, as both the Pistons and Cavaliers also suffer defeat.

Play-off Projection

Celtics' first round match-up could be any team ranging from the Nets, currently No.7, to the Knicks, currently No.14. With several possible trade scenerios in working trying to beat the deadline, it could have major impact to number of teams (Nets, 76ers, Bulls, Knicks) and their chance for the last two play-off spots. The Hawks, currently No.9, have a very good chance to get in with the new addition of Mike Bibby.

The second round match-up will be very interesting in several aspects. Firstly, my projection is that the Cavaliers (currently No.4) will eventually overtake the Magics for the No.3 seeds. And if the Celtics can maintain their No.1 seed, they will have the advantage to avoid playing the Cavs and then the Pistons (currently No.2) in the next round, and take on a relatively weaker team instead.

Secondly, which relates to above, the Cavs currently has the best chance among the East to beat the Pistons in the play-off, as they have done it last year. I know that the Celtics like their chance too, but there is a number of uncertainty against them. One is the match-up with Chauncey Billups individually, and also with the Pistons' play-off experience. So, if the Celtics can maintain their lead over both teams and forcing them to face each other in the second round, there will be a chance for the Celtics to by-pass the Pistons all together. Even if the Pistons beat the Cavs, it should wear them down a little.

As a Celtics' fan, i will take that.

Celtics-Knicks Game (Round 3) Highlight

The Celtics' list of injury is piling up, adding Brian Scalabrine to a groin pull, and Glen Davis (twisted knee) joining in soon after.

Good thing is that they can now nurse injury over the All-Star weekend.

Celtics-Spurs Game Highlight

Take a look at the defence stats, the Celtics kept the Spurs shooting at 44.3% overall, in which Tim Duncan is 10/20 and Manu Ginobili at 7/15. This is without the presence of Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins.

Their replacement have played a solid game, by being physical defending Duncan and to avoid getting into foul trouble. In particular, Glen Davis has 8 rebounds (he also contributes 9 points and 3 steals). But it is his intangible play that is significant (read Steve Weinman's article). Tony Allen comes off the bench to help harass Ginobili into six turnovers.

Doc Rivers' strategy of running game works very well, relying on young legs helped the Celtics to take 18 fast-break points. Rondo has 12 rebounds and 11 assists (only 1 turnover).

"We could not win this game if the pace slowed down at all," Rivers said. "We're not going to win a half-court game against the Spurs because we didn't have a post presence."

Celtics-Clippers Game Highlight

In respond to his 24 points, 8 assists, 4 steals and 5 rebounds performance, Rajon Rondo said, “I’ve been more aggressive, I believe, getting to the paint because KG is supposed to be establishing for other guys, so I wanted to be the guy getting into the paint.”

This game is more like the second match-up betweem the two, as Lebron James have missed the last one. Watch highlight (NBA TV, ESPN).

James can see that the Celts have the best record in the NBA, and he also believes they are at or near the top in another category. Asked if the C’s were among the most talkative teams, he said, “They’re up there. You’ve got them and the Pistons. Those are the two teams that talk, but they’ll back it up.”

On whether the talk is antagonistic, James said, “In a competitive way, but sometimes it can get annoying. But they back it up. Detroit, we all know that they get flying at the mouth sometimes, but they play great basketball. The same with the Celtics.”

The quietest team?

“Utah,” James said. “They just kick your (butt) and they don’t say nothing.”

Playing without Garnett, the Celtics could not stop Dirk Nowitzki, who scored 31. But they manage to limit the rest of the Mavericks' starters to 40 points, missing 22 of 35.

Rajon Rondo, who overcomes foul trouble, has 6 offence rebounds (12 in total), 14 points and 4 assists (but 3 turnovers). His last rebound and putback layup with 42 seconds left is huge.

Rondo is stepping up

There is no coincident for Rajon Rondo's excelled performance (on both ends of the floor), in the absence of Garnett and Ray Allen.

In the Orlando's game, he scores 15, added 5 assists, 6 steals and 5 rebounds (but 3 turnovers). Two nights later against the Miami Heat, he scores 23, added 3 assists, 1 steal and 6 rebounds (only 1 turnover).

While these opposing team point-guards are not the top-tier of the league, the key is that they find it difficult to match Rondo's speed and pace of the game.

With two (Garnett and Allen) of the three options for offence no longer available, Rondo is stepping up his game. He is now running the offence, instead of shepherding, using his quickness dribbling and maneuvering in the lane, and making passes to get his teammates open look. Take a look at the last game stats, three other teammates have scored 20 or above and none of them is Pierce.

Rondo is also driving more to the basket, getting contacts and foul-calls, which means more FT attempts (12 in last two games). His FT accuracy has also improved to over 80% in those games.

Steve Weinman from CelticsBlog sums up, "He has always had the physical ability to wreak havoc in the paint and thread nice passes. Now, he finally has gained the efficacy in his game around the rim and the confidence in his offensive skills to be that player once and for all."

"This isn't to say that Rondo is now The Man or that a few good weeks validate him as a star of any sort. He still has plenty of a ways to go. But he has grown as a player throughout the season, and in the absence of some of the big names on this team of late, he has shown that he is most certainly a very legitimate point guard in this league, and he has demonstrated that there is reason to believe that he can be far more than that in the long term. It is time to free Rajon Rondo, to let his penetration abilities drive the offense, to run screen-and-rolls that force teams to make quick decisions regarding how to cover him around the screens, which will undoubtedly lead to quite a share of open Rondo drives or easy passes for lay-ups."

Celtics-Timberwolves Game Highlight

Call this one the new Celtics vs the ex-Celtics, a.k.a. the team with the best record vs the one with the worst record.

But it is the new Celtics trailing (86-81) with 2:01 left on the clock, and Kevin Garnett out being examined for abdominal pain.

A strange sequence of incidence then follows: Paul Pierce makes two FTs, blocks Al Jefferson shot and then converts on a fifth-chance follow-up; the Celtics causes a crucial five-second inbounds violation; Ray Allen blows a layup (but Kendrick Perkins has the putback) with 16.6 seconds left; and finally, Kevin Garnett, having reentered the game with 1:51 left, knocks the ball away from Sebastian Telfair a few feet from midcourt and then beating the Wolves guard to the ball to put the game away (NBA TV highlight).

Garnett said after the game, "I knew it was Sebastian, so I wanted to scoot up on him and try to make him drive the ball ... I was able to count his dribbles. It went one, two, and I know he likes to crossover [dribble]. I stabbed at it and got it and I just dived. I knew time was running down and I just wanted to be aggressive on the ball."

Celtics-Raptors Game (Round 4) Highlight

Doc Rivers' response to the Raptors' shooting stats, "Fifty-eight percent (from the floor); 71 percent from the 3 (made 15 of 21); 100 percent from the foul line. At least the foul line wasn't guarded".

Kevin Garnett is somewhat more positive, “They shot 71 percent from the 3-point line and 58 percent on field goals and we still had a chance to win the game ... and looking at these numbers you’ve got to damn near shoot perfect to beat us by two. So I’ll take that.”

Defence tactics against the Big-Threes

Recall the two games lost to the Wizards recently, their zone defence has been pretty successful (held Celtics to below 42% FG and 31% 3P). Why does this defence model work against the Big-Threes.

Scott Souza of Daily News gives his analysis. The model does work when Celtics are not moving the ball and instead taking jump-shoot. That's what the zone wants them to do - take quick shots, keep it on one side of the floor and not making the defence to move.

"The zone is just the latest way teams have tried to get a handle on the Celtics offense. Early in the season, foes looked clueless as Boston rang up one blowout after another. Then the focus became stopping Kevin Garnett with more physical play and double teams in the post. Recently, there has been another shift with opponents following the Detroit model of jumping out on the pick-and-roll and slowing the Celtics at the point of attack 25 or 30 feet from the basket, leaving them little time to run their offense ..... Another development has been that teams have chosen to target Ray Allen aggressively considering he has been the least proficient of the Big Trio for most of this season. The goal seems to be to lure Pierce into driving into traffic and taking their chances with House and James Posey."

The latest tactics is to pressure whoever (other than Rajon Rondo) is dribbing the ball up court and force turnover. It works for a while, but eventually the Celtics pushes the ball up the court via the pass rather than the dribble to greater success.

Another possible tactics is taunting selective Celtics in attempt to upset the player and his composure. In the Celtics-Knicks game (NBA TV highlight), Pierce has been ejected after his defender was overzealously physical in defending him, drawing four personal fouls -- and causing the refs to call two double-technicals to both.

The result marks as the only losing streak for the Celtics, so far. Their next game (Jan.16) against the Trail Blazers will not be easy either.

Celtics' offence continue to struggle, shooting an overall 0.419 FG (0.43 till half-time) and 0.250 in 3P. Rondo's absence, especially in 4th quarter (bad back/hamstring), has taken their offence away as well. They manages just 6 points in the final 6 plus minutes, 4 on free throws and the other 2 on a third-chance tip-in.

While Rondo sits, Tony Allen and Eddie House combine for 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal and no turnover.

As Wizards coach Eddie Jordan offered, "A lot of teams miss a key piece and they have to adjust to win. You lose a 3-point shooter, you plug in another 3-point shooter. That's not a problem. But with Rondo, a pure, push-it type of point guard, they can't duplicate that. It's like a shock to the system when you lose someone key and don't have anyone to duplicate what he does."

Celtics' defence is still decent although not consistent, forcing Wizards to make only 0.386 FG, but failing to stop the opponent scoring off the glass in the last 2 plus minutes.

Neither team has recovered from playing the night before, and is reflected in the stats. Celtics manage to make 0.413 FG but committed 21 turnovers, whereas Wizards has made only 0.368 FG and committed 20 turnovers.

Wizards' stronger play in the 4th quarter determine the outcome, with their rebound edge (49 to 30) and accurate FT shooting (made 27 of 30).

Rajon Rondo misses game (sore lower back). Tony Allen starts in his place and finished with 6 rebounds, 4 steals, 4 turnovers and no assist.

Celtics-Bobcats Game (Round 2) Highlight

Last time the Celtics play Bobcats, they won it at the buzzer by 1 point (dump play by Bobcats' Jason Richardson).

It's payback time for Jason (NBA TV, ESPN). He has 34 points from 14 field goals, including several come as the shot clock is about to expire

On a night of bad-shooting (only made 4 of 20 3-pointers), the Celtics really miss the presence of Ray Allen, who misses game due to pinched nerve. Everyone has a sub-par game, even Doc Rivers is unable to address issues. But also credit to the Bobcats, they keep attacting the baskets (scored 48 in the paints) and out-rebound the opponents.

Celtics being banged-up

Garnett has 4 stitches over his eye from the Lakers game last week. Posey has 4 stitches in his arm from the Grizzles game (although this one looks more like an accident), and Rondo has stitches over his eye from the Pistons game over the weekend.

Fortunately, Ray Allen wasn't hurt when he was tackled by Lakers' Odom. Lamar is consequently suspended one game for committing the flagrant foul.

Celtics-Pistons Game (Round 2) Highlights

Both teams have played the night before, so it evens thing out in terms of fatigue factor.

Introducing Glen "Big Baby" Davis (NBA TV). The Pistons have done their best to defend the Big Threes, and they have left the rookie open on several plays and paying the prize. On the other hand, both Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton have uncharacteristic missed free-flows towards the end.

Rajon Rondo continues to struggle against Billups, which prompts Doc Rivers to play Tony Allen instead for 22 minutes.

Celtics-Pistons Game Highlight and After-thought

If you do not have ESPN TV, like me, here is the highlight (ESPN), and more.

As expected, the game is competitive and intense as both teams treat it as a self-measuring stick for the best team in the East.

As Chris Sheridan summarises, "experience, savvy and depth" to be the deciding factors for the outcome. Early in the fourth quarter with a 4 points lead, when Doc Rivers gives Rajon Rondo (who has an impressive first-half) a rest and hands over the ballhandling to Eddie House, he could barely get the ball over the halfcourt line against the suffocating defense of Lindsey Hunter. A 9-2 run put the Pistons ahead 70-67 before Rondo returns, and Detroit never trails again.

Next crucial moment, on their final possession, it looks like the play is drawn for Paul Pierce even though he already has a tentative shooting night (instead of going to the hot-hands). I can understand this from Doc Rivers perspective and i know he is willing to live with the decision. Pierce nevertheless has missed his 15-foot fadeaway attempt from the corner, but more importantly, he shoots it too early, leaving too much time on the clock for Pistons.

Coming out from the last time-out for the final shot, when Pistons' Tayshaun Prince notices that Tony Allen has checked back in as defender, he has told Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton (knowing one of them would get the inbound) to give Tony Allen a pump fake because Tony was just coming in off the bench cold. So Doc Rivers sub pattern and defence strategy has been exposed by the experience of Pistons.

The next meeting between the two will be Jan. 6, at Detroit.

Current Progress:
Through Dec.11, the 6-foot-1 point guard was shooting 54.7 percent from the floor, which ranked 13th overall and first among starting guards. He is also ranked in the top 16 in steals (1.7 per game) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.9).

Rondo's leadership skill is still work-in-progress.
"Rondo is more a leader by example; he's going to work hard but you don't see him as a director. He is a little quieter and not as flamboyant as (Tony) Parker ... Parker had charisma in leading his team. "(SI).

Rondo has made two big changes in his shooting. He hasn't attempted a single three after going a senseless 6-for-29 (20.7 percent) from beyond the arc last year. He has also focused on elevating for his jump shot even though many of his attempts are uncontested as the defenses focus on Boston's three stars. Rondo tries to jump to the same height to develop consistency.

Weakness:
Rondo is converting only 48.5 percent from the free throw line, which speaks for his confidence under pressure.

History:
Rondo is drafted No. 21 in the 2006 draft. The Celtics to acquire him in a draft-night trade with Phoenix.

Parker is drafted No.21 in the 2001 draft by the Spurs.

Before the game, Pierce scolded a couple of teammates in the locker room who having too much fun and screaming to some music. "We're trying to play a game," he said. The two players got quiet. No detail about who the two are (ESPN).

Sitting at the bottom of the Atlantic divison, the Sixers are all cited up to play the league leader. I wonder if the Celtics' sloppy performance in the first half is to do with the lack of team practice or something else. But they are able to lift it up after Doc Rivers challenge individuals to play better during half-time break.

Two after-thoughts.

It seems that Ray Allen's legs are tied towards the end of regulation, as he missed two free-flows uncharacteristicly (he has played 44 minutes up to that point). I guess his sore ankle, hurt in previous game, also making it difficult to play the long minutes. Given the Celtics' bench is thin in guard-position due to injury, let's keep monitoring how coach Doc Rivers will handle Allen's playing time tomorrow against the Knicks.

It is reported that LeBron James has been talking trash with Paul Pierce the entire second half. After LeBron James misses an 'in his face' attempt to end the regulation, he becomes more focus and asserts his dominance during OT. I know that it is only November, but Paul Pierce and his team will remember this loss.

Both teams will meet two more times during regular season, including the one coming this weekend (Dec. 2, local time) at home. I can almost sense that the Celtics will do anything for revenge.

The New Big Three are meshing

Before the season starts, speculation is on about who will be the primary offence (Pierce or Garnett or Allen). I think the consensus concludes that it will be between Garnett and Pierce, through the high/low post, while Allen will wait for the double-team.

Bethlehem Shoals of FanHouse has posted an interesting observation. Shoals compares the New Three's game with Spurs' trio as follow,

But whereas as the serene Tim Duncan has remained the philosophical center of the Spurs, the Celts orient themselves around Paul Pierce--perhaps the most flawed of the team's trio of All-Stars ... he's expected to play to his greatest strength: Pure, unadulterated go-for-self scoring.

Even though Pierce may not be their best player, Shoals believes that the flaw in his game should be viewed as "honest, indefatigable scoring to the table, which at his level is a very valuable commodity."

We have seen how well Celtics have played so far. They won games by the margins of 20, 3, 26, 23 and 11 respectively. While Garnett has streamlined his rebounding and passing game, Pierce and sometimes Allen looks for their shots. If and when Pierce struggles, the other two compensates (Allen won it in OT in the second game).

I have to tip my hat off to Danny Ainge, who "figures out a way (bringing in two of the most adaptable all-stars) to neutralize Pierce's drawbacks while still allowing him to do what he does best".

As Shoals sums up, "that's what makes this Big Three such an ingenious combination."

As the end of first week of the season approaches, we have already been entertained with a few surprises (especially if you are fan of the Bulls, the Pacers or the Heat). But here comes an interesting one.

According to Peter May, the respectful pro-sport journalist, the #1 defensive team in the NBA, in terms of field goal percentage (35.9%), is the Boston Celtics. And not only are they tops in that category, they also were third in points allowed (article).

I should point out that Celtics have had a relative easy schedule so far (played only two games). Both wins, however, are against play-off teams with pretty good offence.

So the sign is there, with fresh legs and light travelling schedule. Let's see if they can keep this up.

Three-teams Race to the Conference Final

Around this time of the NBA calender, you read prediction about which team will win the conference anywhere you go. So let me immerse myself to this role play.

No, i am not going to hard sell you the Celtics except saying this, the chance of Boston to get there is better than 1 in 4. But there are few other teams which are rated higher than the Celtics by many experts. The Bulls, the Pistons, and may be the Cavaliers, from top of my head.

The Pistons are definitely a threat. With the core group of Billups, Hamilton, Prince and Wallace, Mcdyess, they have the superior match-up against the Celtics' triple-threat, either in isolation or in transition. I'm looking forward to their first match-up in regular season.

Many have rated the Bulls the top team in the east, based on their toughness and deep run in last season playoff. Somehow i feel the Celtics will have a better chance if facing them, with Pierce and Garnett playing the low/high post game, verse the Bulls' perimeter game.

The Cavaliers are probably less a threat at this stage, as they're still trying to bring back the full team from last season. Let's give them a bit more time.

OK, the above is based on what we have already known.

What about the thing we don't know yet, such as .....
(it's in today's sport news) the possibility of Kobe Bryant be traded .....

My first reaction is, to subscribe every cable sports TV available and to start re-arranging my appointment schedule for the next few months.

Seriously, to make this trade possible, the other team must have enough assets to offer and deep pocket to take on Bryant's contract, and he will only be interested in playing for a title contender. So there are only handful of teams qualified, and i am assuming that Lakers will cross out those teams that are competing in the same conference.

So here are my two possible scenerios (the number in bracket is how many years remaining in contract):

<1> Trade Bryant (3 yrs) to Detroit, for Richard Hamilton (3 yrs), Jason Maxiell (1 yr), Rodney Stuckey (2 yrs) or Ronald Murray (1 yr) plus other bench players. Bryant will team up with Billups, Prince, Wallace and to become the all defence-team of the league.

This is purely from my speculation. But the possible trade will meet both teams' need. Lakers will get Hamilton and Stuckey to somewhat fill-in the vaccum, in the catagory of total point per game and in defence, and to build for the future prospect of Stuckey and Bynum. In addition, Lakers will also add Maxiell to strength their rebound and interior defence catagory, Detroit, needless to say, will get another shot to the Final, with most of their core group intact. I am, however, assuming that Bryant doesn't mind to move from LA to Detroit (i could imagine it'll be a culture shock to him). A question remains is how Detroit's offer can beat the next team (below) for the trade.

<2> Trade Bryant to Chicago, for Tyrus Thomas (1 yr), Ben Gordon (1 yr), Chris Duhon (1 yr), Thabo Sefolosha (1 yr), Viktor Khryapa (1 yr) and may be another bench player. Bryant will team up with Hinrich, Deng, Wallace and Nocioni (or Joe Smith) as the starting five.

This will be the best possible offer available in market right now, in terms of value for return (even better if Chicago is willing to include Deng or Hinrich) and Bryant has already given his consesus to play for the Bulls. The problem with the Bulls is whether they will find good enough player to fill the void (much like what Boston have gone through).

The experts analyse that possible trade will not happen till the season ends. If, however, the above scenerio does materialise, it will still be a three-teams race to the conference final. But fighting for better seeding in playoff will likely be at top of the list for each team right from the start.

It is going to be a fantastic season to watch.

Comparing Celtics new roster with 2002-03 champion Spurs

The more i compare both teams, the more similarity i see in them. Make me wondering whether Danny Ainge and Doc Rivers are thinking along the same path.

The 2002-03 champion of the Spurs is very different from the team that has won the title a few years earlier. Building a team around the twin-tower of Duncan and Robinson, second-year French star Tony Parker (drafted in the first round of the 2001 NBA Draft) is the starting point guard. The squad also features a variety of newly acquired three-point shooters, including veterans, Danny Ferry, Steve Kerr and Steve Smith , swingman and defence specialist Stephen Jackson and Bruce Bowen, and a rookie Manu Ginobili (1999 second-round draft choice playing in his first NBA season). The current roster of Celtics features the trio of Peace, Garnett and Ray Allen, with Rondo and Perkins likely be included to the starting five.

When i compares the two rosters, i see similarity in both building a winning team of similar game (the inside-outside threats) with players of similar skills. Spurs have Duncan and aged Robinson inside complementing each other's play, surrounded by mixed of shooters newly joined the team that year. Celtics have Pierce and Garnett working on the low/high posts and complementing one another. Interestingly either one can also switch and engineer offence from perimeter (or penetration). Of course Ray Allen is their other alternative from perimeter. You may argue that there is a gap in terms of the quality of shooters, in favour to Spurs. I agree. So is Danny and Doc, and that's why they're trying to land another shooter like Reggie Miller.

Another similarity is the starting point guards of both teams, both in their second NBA season with certain limitation, Parker's penetration and sometimes inaccurate jump-shot, and Rondo's shooting skill. Among their other difference, i think the most important one is prior playoff experience, which matters during playoff time.

Both teams have chemistry uncertainty to deal with. Spurs have nine new players then and likewise for Celtics. On hindsight we know how well it works out for Spurs. i sense the same outcome will happen for Celtics, with the leadership of Garnett and Peace and their complementing personality (more detail can be found through google search). i also like Ray Allen and Perkins with their team-first attitude. Overall i like the roster that Danny has put together.

Completing my comparison, the defence standpoint also draws some similarity. Spurs' defence covers almost everywhere from perimeter to the paint. The only weak area may be Parker's defence skill and is often explored by the opposing team with bigger guard. On contrary Rondo's defence skill is supposed to be his strength. Celtics' roster also have filled with players with pretty good defence skill. With Garnett and Perkins filling the paint and backing up by Pollard and Powe, Peace is now focusing his training in perimeter defence and Posey will be joining him to strengthen this catagory. My BIG question mark, however, is how well they gels together in team defence, especially in transition and against point-guard with great passing skill.

If they can deliver soon enough, say within first two to three months into the season, i like Celtics' chance to reach the Conference Final.
